Drawing on a range of theories, models, and concepts from the social sciences, organizational theory, the humanities, and philosophy, Styhre (management, U. of Gothenburg, Sweden) examines the concepts of vision and visuality as they apply to the functioning of organizations. He first explores theories of vision and visuality, concluding that modern theories offer radical new ideas about what constitutes vision and what vision is in comparison to classical or early modern thinking. Two empirical studies of vision in the workplace investigate the ability of scientific researchers involved in new drug development to identify and isolate interesting visual representations in their work, and the use of a variety of visual tools by architects (photographs, CAD images, full-scale models) to articulate ideas, capture certain features of the imagined building, and to convey meaning.
